split infinitive
Although splitting the infinitive is sometimes fine, sometimes even necessary, the general neglect of the rule against it has produced an epidemic of grotesques. For example:

- I haven't worked for a year to defeat the Military Creation Act, to be not there when its fate is decided.
- I haven't worked for a year to defeat the Military Creation Act, only to be not there when its fate is decided.
- I haven't worked for a year to defeat the Military Creation Act only to be absent when its fate is decided.
