split infinitive

Although splitting the infinitive is sometimes fine, sometimes even necessary, the general neglect of the rule against it has produced an epidemic of grotesques. For example:

    • I haven't worked for a year to defeat the Military Creation Act, only to be not there when its fate is decided.
    • I haven't worked for a year to defeat the Military Creation Act only to be absent when its fate is decided.
    • I try to on this show not be the former player that walked uphill both ways... 🔗
